Aural Terrains

week one
mapping sound
For this piece, I wanted to show two types of sound that I hear as soon as I get off from from the ferry. I've used the boat sound as my beginning and end to show the cycle of my every day traveling to Waiheke and to Auckland. I do believe as well that there is no such thing as noise and that everything is a sound. For me, there are two types of sound. Sound that is soothing for the ears and sound that is unpleasant. I go in two different places where these two sounds are being heard. I wanted to show the contrast between these two and how big the difference is. In the city because the place is so crowded, many sounds are heard and so it is quite hard to distinguish all the sound. In the city you can hear the sound is distorted. But in Waiheke, the sound that is heard is easily distinguished because it is not crowded and so few sound is heard. I wanted to show the idea of having to many creates distortion in the sound and stress in the ears and less makes a beautiful pleasant sound.

music score

for my sound drawing, I asked my friend to play the sound drawing score that I did. He used the musical typing in GarageBand and interpret the song on how he sees it. He said that the score looked chaotic. We didn't quite know how long the music will go so we decided to just go with the time of the sound drawing that I did. He also randomly chose 3 instrument for this music.

performance

the team had some ideas of doing a mixed Live performance of nature, urban and people from places like the pier, parking building in Victoria st., and food court. This idea was to mix the different sound that we are hearing in different places. The idea was to have different people in our groups to do it live in different places and feed through the main computer where the performance is taken place.

We also had the idea of doing the performance in train where we record sounds from the passengers and maybe using some made instrument as an interaction part of the performance. I had this idea of making a string instrument that can be put on the ground close to the door of the train where people can walk through it, step on it and make sound out of it.

Finally, the team agreed to do a live sound performance from different countries. We are not quite sure how this will work but we are hoping that it will be a success as it is a really good idea to also let other people experience the sound that is not heard here in Auckland. I provided the leads we needed for our performance.

The performance was a great success, although we had trouble of the connection from the internet and did not get live feed from all the countries, we still did get live sound from other countries like Singapore, Manila and New York. I had a chance of doing sound mixing as well, it was hard to find where the sound is coming from as the sound from outside is also contributing and the speakers are faced away.

The team have been really productive and everyone have shared ideas. Everyone had a role of what needed to be done and we've all done those roles properly. Everyone had made sure that it is the idea is clear and understood it. There had been some little argument but it's part of sharing ideas.
