an experimental film made by Geogre Maciunas. is about a flux of art moving though out the film. He used shapes like circles lines and curves and only used two colors (black and white). As I watched the film the images started going faster looking like an optical illusion and it looked like 3D. As it goes faster I was getting drawn to it and staring at it and couldn't take my eyes off the film.
However, I did not understand what the film is really about. and what it's meant to be or trying to say. Until I focused on the title and the word 'flux' made me understood it. As the speed change in each patter the direction or flow of where is the image is going change.
Another experimental film that I watched was made by George Bretch which is the "Entrance to Exit". Before watching the film, I expected the film with a beginning and end which it does after watching it. What I did not expect on the film is that there was nothing, it was empty. It was just a white background in the beginning that changed to black. However, I did not stop from watching it and had full expectation that something will pop out or it will suddenly change out of the blue… but nothing. The only thing that changed through out the film is the color (white to black). However, the background made me think of an empty space and with just an empty space things can still change.

When I read what the film 'The Red Shoes' is about, I was already interested because I like ballet. I had no idea that it was an old film so I was falling asleep not half way through the film. Sitting there for two hours, watching an old film that is not as good as 'Avatar' with no space to stretch your legs was really painful. What I noticed on the film 'The Red Shoes' are the effects that were used. The film was made in 1940s and I never thought that in this era, the film industry are already using effects. I think that the visual effects are quite good for an old film. Mainly that is what I was focusing while watching the film. On the part where Victoria Page(ballerina) was dancing in the song 'The Red Shoes', the visual effects were used a lot. Even though it didn't look good, those effects have exposed the fill industries in experimenting with the film and using other technologies or techniques to make the film look better.

Second semester just started and we're already full on! We were given our new project and in this project we had to create an auxiliary equipment for 2 cameras. After the brief was handed in, we got into group and had a little chat of what our plan is and what role we wanted to be. I've chosen the fabricator assistant because I like making things and taking pieces apart. I chose this role and not the fabricator because I know that I'm still not quite knowledgeable in building a device. As a fabricator assistant I can help build a device and also learn from the fabricator. Tuesday we did individual research and Wednesday will be just sharing ideas and inspiration for the project.

Wednesday we were introduced in Solid Works, It was really confusing for me to understand. Some of the people in my class already know how to use it which is an advantage for them. Before the Solid Work tutorial start, we had a group meeting and shared ideas. Our group are favoring on the idea of putting the device on the dog and one of the camera is seeing the city in the dog's perspective. However, we are still open in some ideas that will come up.

Thursday was really interesting Gabriel showed us some basics in after effect. It really draws my attention on what you can do in the after effect. The after affect looks complicated but I am willing to learn how to use it.
23/07/2010
Friday we had 3D lab and was introduced in every machine that we will be using or might be using for the project. I'm really looking forward in experiencing of using those machines and making device.
26-27/07/2010
Thursday and Friday we started designing our camera rig on solid works. measurements are done so on tuesday we're going start doing the fabrication.
(3-6/08/2010)
cutting metals wasn't that hard. I had fun doing the fabrication but welding really small metal pieces is hard. After doing the fabrication we tried the camera rig on the dog and we had some complication on keeping the rig on the dog. Because it's too heavy, the camera fall on the side and makes it really hard for the dog to walk. We add more metals on each side of the rig to support it and add wheels on it like training wheels.
10/08/2010
The training wheels was really good although when we tried it in the city, the rig still fall on the side and the dog walks sideways.

PRESENTATION WEEK!
2:15 I was scheduled to do the presentation. Public speaking, having the spot light, talking in front of groups of people and being ASSESSED at the same time was really scary. I have the problem of my whole body shaking when I know I have to present things in front. Obviously this is not my strength. I can do the task and work on it but talking about it was hard for me. This wasn't my first time to talk in front of people and I've done it a few times in high school. I did a lot of preparation with the verbal presentation than the visual. I know that it has to have a balance between these two but verbal presentation was my biggest fear and weakness. I was really afraid with the question and answer side and I that all my answers didn't come out as when I thought of it. I know and have always been told that I need to boost my confidence up as this will help me in my life.
The presentation has helped me a lot as I know now what I need to change and improve from myself. After the presentation my main goal through out this course is to break out and step out from my comfort zone as this pulls me down making myself look like I am not being part of a group work.

Serious fun
11, may 2010
We had a meeting about our character and what character we are going to use for our project. We've decided to use the 'cube' first as our character and develop it or add more character. Our project is going to be virtual pet where we are going to interact the human with the digital world. We've also talked about how the character will move and how it will interact with us or with the viewer.

After finishing the processing assignment, we've finally REALLY started doing our project. Our group have done some research relating to the project. Today we did A LOT of research on how we are going to relate our work with the brief and what we can use or adapt to our work. We have been doing trial and error with the code on 'processing', changing codes to make a ball move when we hit the ball. Basically when the code is run, the camera from the laptop is operated showing us. A screen is shown on the window and is viewing a ball together with the viewer and we are interacting with the ball by moving(i.e., when touching the ball). The ball will move(bounce) when it is in contact with a black gradient showing from the edge of the viewer. This is as far as we've got and we've still haven't put our character in.
19 may 2010
We have been stuck with processing and it's going crazy… the image showing from the camera is not mirrored so we have to change the codes because it's hard to interact when it looks like you are moving the wrong part of the body. We spent all day looking for codes that we can use to invert the image so it will look right.
We tested and run code and viewed it on the projector and the image has been MIRRORED! Now we have to apply the right physics on the ball so that the ball will bounce on the right direction when it is hit, because at the moment the ball doesn't go where it should go. Also we have to try different lighting so that the ball will hit the right gradient from the body when moving. We wanted to change our character "cube so we've decided to make different character each that we will use for our project and decide which one will look better.
20, may 2010
the ball is now moving on the right direction when in contact, when the hand is lift up to hit the ball upward the ball bounce up instead of going down which is what we are aiming for.

animata and max
Making a puppet of yourself was fun, but it was a little bit frustrating when the puppet doesn't move on how you want it to move. It was a really bad decision of giving up on my first task. On the second one I did not gave up though, I tried all my best and I did it. I made a puppet with a background. Ones you know what you are doing and have learnt on how the bones move, it's not that hard to do it. It gets faster and easier.
After making a puppet we now have to move on to a very DIFFICULT task, controlling a puppet using a keyboard/mouse and the max program. the fun bit that i find in this task is dissecting keyboards and mouse. I like opening things apart, fixing it and trying to put it back together again. We have to hack these electronic device (e.g mouse and keyboard) and control our puppet using the MAX program. MAx program has given me a headache. It was so hard to understand and I couldn't work it out. I sat in front of my precious laptop trying to figure out how it work, searching for tutorials and still my brain hasn't absorbed it. Most people in my class have chosen to use keyboard, and I heard that it is easier than the mouse. On the other hand I have chosen to use mouse to give myself a challenge. And I did. The mouse only has limited input capabilities than the keyboard. While doing the task, I have now experienced that programing is really hard and not that easy, but if I keep on trying I know that I can do it, I just need to be patient with it.
I did not manage to make my animata puppet work using the max program. However, we went through it again as I wasn't alone struggling in this task. After going through it I just found out that max5 is so much easier and better than max4.6.

Drawing Machine
Last week we were given a task to make a NXT lego robot that drew. The robot must produce 3 drawings and it must also respond to sound, light, distance, touch and incorporate pre-programmed protocol responses.
Me and my group came up with our own ideas and shared it within the group. most of the ideas were good but we were limited with materials or complicated. In the end my group decided to make a simple drawing machine that draw using salt. We've come across some problems and re-built our robot many times one of the problem was using sand to draw. The sand is not as fine like the salt so it was hard for the sand to come out of the dispenser. Although the salt is really fine, there were blocks of salt sometimes that block the dispenser.
The robot moves using the light sensor where it find the difference between light and dark colour and it moves around. When we put our robot to the test, we walked around Queen Street to find patterned floor or ground. We found some patterned floor but the robot couldn't read the pattern or the difference between the colour of the patterned floor.
In the end, we tried to test the robot on the parking lot and the robot read the yellow line and followed the line. it was a really successful test but during the presentation the robot failed and didn't follow the line and that we did.
